I only spent 18 months at Grey, arriving mid-year in 1967 on the Monday after Grey’s first rugby team had lost against Rondebosch in Cape Town. After matric, I spent a year in the Navy, during which time I played for the SA Defence Force rugby team against Western Province. Our old school mate Sydney Badenhorst was also in the team.
I had a brief stint at UCT, where I played for the under-20 team. In 1971, I received a contract to play in Rome with my brother, Nelson. After this 6-months contract, I returned to Cape Town. That was the last time I saw or spoke with Nelson.
Back in Cape Town, I worked for Honda, who sponsored my participation in motocross, a sport in which I’m still very active. I then decided that South Africa needed a mixed race rugby team and joined a club in the Bo-Kaap (I played some matches against the well-known Watson brothers, Cheeky and Valance).
In 1976, I started a car-service business, Babrow Auto Service in Hout Street, which I still run single-handedly. I also started racing rubber ducks and twice won the SA Championships.
I met my partner, Gill, when I was 40. I have never been married and also don’t have any kids that I know of.
