I spent 9 months in the army in Bethlehem, after which a stint at Wits sharpened up my card-playing skills. I joined The Perm where I progressed to systems programmer, supporting the online system, of which I wrote the teller section in Assembler.
I moved to a steel merchant (Namascor) in 1979 to run their IT department, where I spent seven happy years before moving to Finansbank where I ran IT. Nedbank bought Finansbank and I stayed there for another seven years, writing a bespoke version of Outlook. A brief stint back at Namascor was followed by Standard Bank, who gave me my first taste of international travel.
SB was looking for someone to run the offshore SB IT team in Jersey and the Isle of Man in the UK, and having lost my first wife a few years earlier, I applied. I spent 2½ years there, and then having married a Scottish lady, had the opportunity to move to London with SB Plc.
Three years later, I joined Lloyds Bank (also in London), where I have been since. Sadly, I then lost my second wife, but have subsequently gone back to SA for a third wife, and we are happily married and live in Ashford in Kent, where I commute to London for work.
I love music and play golf (I was off a 5 in SA), but the UK weather has added significantly to my SA handicap (now 16). I do a lot of walking, which we do bravely on our travels.
