In 1969 I went to the Air Force, where I was regimental instructor. In 1970 and 1971, I played rugby for Natal University, where sport (and sports!) got in the way of study. In 1973/74 I studied at Pretoria Tech, where I obtained a diploma in Ceramics. I worked for Corobrik and progressed to branch manager.
I played 1st league cricket and rugby for a long time and also played one game for the Transvaal under-25 rugby team. Eventually, I went into earth-moving contracting with a partner. Alas, the prime interest rate skyrocketed and the diesel price doubled, resulting in our demise.
Along the way, I got married and divorced …
Twenty years ago, Bell Equipment offered me a job and I got married again to a wonderful lady. I have two adopted children and a daughter (own), all from wife one; and three step children. I also have three wonderful grandchildren. I’ve had a long, enjoyable and successful career with Bell, winning many Salesman of the Year awards. I was supposed to retire three years ago, but the company asked me to stay on with a succession of annual contracts.
I’ve had a triple bypass along the way and prostate cancer beaten. Mountain bike cycling is what now keeps me out of mischief.
