After leaving school, I spent the year having fun at the Air Force Gym in Valhalla, Pretoria, after which I worked for four years for Barclay Bank DCO in East London.
In 1973 I joined G.K.N. Mills (a scaffolding and formwork company), and spent three years in Umtata in the then Transkei, after which I transferred to East London as branch manager. In 1979 I joined my brother-in-law in a business venture which was sold on to Group 5 civils in Johannesburg.
In 1983 I joined Form-scaff, where I had a wonderful career: five years in East London as Branch Manager, five years in Pretoria as Area Manager, six years in Durban as Area Manager, two years in Johannesburg as Project Director and eight years in Cape Town as Area Director. I retired in 2010.
I got married to my wife, Maree’, in 1979 and we have three children: James, who resides in Newlands, Cape Town, Lisa (Simonstown) and Michael John (Pretoria). Maree’ and I have built our retirement home in Kleinmond near Hermanus. I play golf and have an interest in classic cars.
